Carrying on a legacy of affordable fun that stretches all the way back to the 240Z of the early 1970s, the 2012 Nissan 370Z is proof that you don’t have to be rich to drive a cool sports car.

With its gutsy engine, athletic handling, sexy styling and driver-oriented two-seat cockpit, the rear-wheel-drive 370Z has all the sports car bases covered. The fact that you can pick one up for about the price of a top-line family sedan makes owning one just that much easier to rationalize.

If the standard 370Z coupe isn’t quite your style, you’ll find the 370Z Roadster delivers the same entertaining driving dynamics with the added bonus of a power-folding soft top that makes it possible to enjoy al fresco motoring in about 20 seconds. If it’s more muscle you want, the high-performance 370Z Nismo model features a more powerful engine, 19-inch alloy wheels and a sport-tuned suspension.

While the 370Z has a lot of strong points, it has a few notable shortcomings. For one thing, the 3.7-liter V6 sounds coarse and almost trucklike when pushed hard and lacks the pleasing exhaust note you’d expect from a car like this. The coupe’s interior is also downright loud, especially with the optional Sport package’s 19-inch wheels and tires, a condition that becomes tedious on longer drives.

For some enthusiasts with children, the lack of a backseat might be an issue, and that could make a number of four-person sport coupes more appealing, such as the BMW 1 Serie, Hyundai Genesis Coupeand the mechanically similar (though much more refined) Infiniti G37 coupe. For about the same amount of dough, you could also pick up the performance versions of three American icons: the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang.

Ultimately though, the 370Z continues to excel at its time-honored mission: delivering strong sports car performance at a relatively reasonable price.

The 2012 Nissan 370Z is offered in two-seat coupe and soft-top convertible body styles. The coupe is available in base, Touring and Nismo trim levels, while the convertible (a.k.a. Roadster) comes in base and Touring only.

Standard features for the entry-level 370Z coupe include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic bi-xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, automatic climate control, an eight-way manual driver seat, a tilt-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth upholstery and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

Moving up to the Touring coupe gets you leather and faux suede upholstery, heated four-way power seats (includes four-way driver lumbar adjustment), an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cargo area cover, Bluetooth phone connectivity and an eight-speaker Bose sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer and satellite radio. The Nismo coupe adds 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and high-performance tires, stiffer suspension tuning, upgraded brakes, a limited-slip rear differential and a more powerful V6, plus unique front and rear fascias, a larger rear wing and special Nismo interior trim details.

The 370Z Roadster comes standard with a power-operated soft top, but is otherwise equipped similarly to the coupe. Likewise for the Roadster Touring model with the addition of heated and ventilated power seats.

Coupe and Roadster Touring buyers looking for more performance can add an optional Sport package that includes 19-inch wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, upgraded brakes, front and rear spoilers and the SynchroRev Match feature for manual-transmission-equipped cars. Touring models can also be fitted with a navigation system with a touchscreen interface, real-time traffic and weather updates, voice controls, digital music storage, Bluetooth audio streaming, an iPod interface and a rearview camera.

In base and Touring trims, the rear-wheel-drive 2012 Nissan 370Z and 370Z Roadster are powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that puts 332 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque to the pavement through a standard six-speed manual transmission. When equipped with the Sport package, the manual transmission comes with the SynchroRev Match feature, which automatically matches engine rpm to wheel speed during downshifts to make clutch re-engagements super-smooth. A seven-speed automatic transmission with steering-column-mounted shift paddles and rev-matched downshifts is available as an option.

In Edmunds performance testing, a 370Z coupe with the Sport package accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a quick 5.1 seconds, while the Roadster did it in 5.5 seconds. The fuel economy penalty for such hustle isn’t devastating, with EPA estimates for the coupe coming in at 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined with the manual and 19/26/22 with the automatic. The Roadsters are nearly as good, at 18/25/20 with the manual and 18/25/21 mpg with the automatic.

The 370Z Nismo model has a specially tuned version of the same V6 engine that produces 350 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed manual with SynchroRev Match is the only transmission offered.

Standard safety equipment for the 2012 Nissan 370Z includes antilock brakes, traction and stability control, side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags (roof-mounted in the coupe and door-mounted in the Roadster) and active head restraints.

In Edmunds brake testing, a coupe with the Sport package’s upgraded brakes stopped from 60 mph in an outstanding 101 feet — about the same as the Nissan GT-R. A Roadster with the Sport package took only 5 more feet to stop.

The Nissan 370Z’s interior features an attractive design and quality materials, especially in the upscale Touring models with their leather and faux suede upholstery. Seats are comfortable and supportive, and despite the lack of a telescoping adjustment for the steering wheel, the driving position is near ideal. One downside to the car’s styling is that its thick roof pillars make for limited visibility out the back.

Those who opt for the Roadster won’t have long to wait when they want to catch some rays, as the fully lined soft top folds itself neatly under a color-matched hard tonneau cover in roughly 20 seconds. As in most sports cars, luggage space is scarce, with just 6.9 cubic feet of storage under the coupe’s hatchback and a slightly smaller than average 4.2 cubic feet in the convertible’s trunk.

Competing in the heavyweight heart of the luxury market, the Lexus GS has often stood in the shadow of rivals like the BMW 5-series, the Mercedes-Benz E-class, and the Audi...

Competing in the heavyweight heart of the luxury market, the Lexus GS has often stood in the shadow of rivals like the BMW 5-series, the Mercedes-Benz E-class, and the Audi A6. More so than the upper end of the market, where the LS does well, or the entry-luxury segment, where the ES is quite popular, the mid-luxury market prizes driving dynamics. Thus, for Lexus GS chief engineer Yoshiko Kanamori, who was attempting “to move the GS into the heart of the luxury market,” the number one way to do that was to give the new car an “emotionally intriguing driving experience.”

Increasing the emotional appeal of the GS was also the impetus behind the new styling. Like it or not, it does stand out more than any previous GS. The pinched grille, which Lexus refers to as a “spindle” grille, is a key element of the new face of Lexus; expect it to quickly spread throughout the company’s lineup. A new F Sport package further turns up the visual wattage with more aggressively styled lower front and rear fascias, a rear spoiler, a unique grille texture, and nineteen-inch wheels.

The car’s overall length and wheelbase remain the same, but width has increased by less than an inch. That has led to a noticeably wider cabin, and the horizontally oriented dashboard plays up that fact. The new interior is much more modern-looking than its dowdy predecessor. Cars with navigation — which is optional but is expected to be in nearly all cars — get a huge, twelve-inch split screen. (Cars without navigation have an eight-inch multi-function screen instead.) A raft of newly available options brings the GS into the modern age; they include a head-up display, night vision, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a driver-drowsiness monitor. The interior is notably richer than before, and there are padded surfaces covered in stitched leather on the dash, the sides of the console, the center armrest, and the door panels. LED ambient lighting is standard, three two-tone color schemes are available, and the trim bits are matte wood, bamboo (for the Hybrid, naturally), or wavy-textured aluminum (in the F Sport). Highly comfortable, multi-function power seats, with extendable under-thigh support and articulating backrests, are included with the luxury and F Sport packages (the F Sport seats add adjustable lateral support). The overall effect is luxe and modern, and nudges up against Audi and Infiniti at the top of the class.

The ultrawide screen has great resolution and, smartly, is split asymmetrically, with the larger portion usually given over to navigation and the smaller side still able to show audio info, HVAC details, or hybrid system monitoring. The Lexus Remote Touch mouse controller has been improved, in that you now simply push down on it to select “enter” rather than pushing a button on the side, although it still requires more concentration to use than most knob-style controllers. There are a few physical buttons, for the climate control and for some audio functions, with knobs for volume and tuning, but we’d still like to see more functions outside of the screen, such as navigation zooming and audio presets. The large center console houses the heated and cooled seat controls; two cup holders under a dampened lid (which, strangely, doesn’t sit flush when closed); a knob to select drive modes; the nicely shaped gear lever; and a wide center armrest. Order the luxury package, and rear-seat passengers get their own audio controls (which can be locked out from the front) and climate controls. Rear-seat space has improved slightly and offers good headroom and generous knee clearance, but footroom under the front seats is tight.

Whir the power seat into place, then do the same with the power-adjustable steering column, and you’ll find that the seating position is very good, with a large dead pedal and good forward visibility. (Rear visibility is not great, but of course a backup camera is standard). The meaty, three-spoke steering wheel encourages you to grab hold at nine and three.

Punch the ignition button in the GS350 and the carryover 3.5-liter V-6 fires up. Revised engine management has yielded a token improvement in output, to 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. A drive select knob alters throttle response, although the differences are subtle. The engine intake has been altered to channel more sound to the cabin, and indeed, there is a notable growl at mid and high rpm. Lexus has elected to stick with a six-speed automatic transmission (with standard shift paddles) despite the fact that seven- and eight-speeds have become common in this class. Even so, engineers were able to eke out a 2 mpg improvement in fuel economy, to a respectable 19/28 mpg.

We can’t talk about fuel economy without mentioning the GS450h. The hybrid’s engine is still 3.5 liters, but it’s now a more efficient, Atkinson-cycle V-6, and that helps the new GS hybrid realize a major improvement in fuel economy. Whereas the previous GS450h got a rather embarrassing 22/25 mpg, the new car is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Compared with the standard GS, then, the hybrid provides an additional 10 mpg in the city and a 6-mpg improvement on the highway, making it a much more credible proposition than the previous version. Its also demands fewer tradeoffs, with regenerative brakes that are far easier to modulate than before — they still don’t feel as natural as conventional brakes, but they’re not bad for regenerative brakes. Also, a repackaged battery eats up less trunk space.

Despite Lexus’s goal to make the GS more of a driver’s car, the V-8 offering has been dropped. The hybrid, with 338 total horsepower, is now the most powerful GS, and Lexus executives express the hope that it might satisfy buyers who come looking for a V-8. We doubt it. Admittedly, we’re not talking about a lot of people (the take rate for the V-8 was in the single digits), but throttle response with the CVT and the fact that you can’t get all-wheel drive or the F-Sport package with the hybrid mean that it’s not likely to satisfy a V-8 intender. Also, the GS450h’s greater horsepower is offset by its 400 extra pounds, so acceleration is really no better than with the standard V-6 (5.6 seconds to 60 mph, according to Lexus, versus 5.7 for the GS350).

Unfortunately, the F Sport also offers no additional performance — it has the same powertrain as any GS350 — although Lexus is giving F Sport greater credence than it used to. Previously, F Sport performance bits were available on a piece-by-piece basis, with eye-watering price tags ($3025 for the front brake upgrade, anyone?). Now, F Sport is a package, and while it has no powertrain changes, its mechanical upgrades include adaptive dampers, variable-ratio steering, staggered eight- and nine-inch wide wheels with high-performance tires (eight-inch-wide wheels and all-season rubber with AWD), and larger front brake rotors with higher-friction pads. Also exclusive to the F Sport — as an option — is four-wheel steering.

With a base suspension, an adaptive suspension, and a firmer adaptive suspension (in the F Sport) — the latter two offering standard and sport modes — there’s a lot of different permutations to the new GS chassis. But on our drive through the Orange County suburban sprawl, on a short section of the twisty Ortega Highway, and even on an autocross course, our overall impression was that the bandwidth of the various suspension iterations was in fact pretty narrow. With the adaptive suspension, for instance, the difference between the two modes was discernible, but just barely. Commendably, however, even the F Sport’s firmer setting delivered a comfortable ride over what little bad pavement we could find; and in the standard setting the car still felt tied down on the Ortega Highway switchbacks. Four-wheel steering, which can be off-putting because it creates a second yaw moment for a given steering input, instead was well-integrated and made the car slightly more agile through the slalom course. In real life, however, its more useful benefit may be its fractionally shorter turning circle.

All GS iterations use electric power steering, and it’s improved over the previous version. Cars equipped with active suspension also have selectable steering effort. Unfortunately, the higher steering effort and the firmer damping are called up together, with Sport-plus mode, so you can’t combine the higher-effort steering (which you might want all the time) and the mellower suspension (which would be preferable on bad roads). That said, the steering is fairly quick and it does load up as you add more lock, but it’s still somewhat artificial feeling and muted in its feedback. Again, we were happy that the variable-ratio system in the F Sport does not call undue attention to itself, à la BMW’s available active steering. Speaking of BMW, though, there was a 5-series on hand at the autocross course, and its steering did feel more natural — and the 5-series hardly provides the ultimate in BMW steering — and the BMW chassis, although more tail-happy, also seemed more progressive when it let go.

“We’re not trying to make a BMW,” insists Lexus U.S. boss Mark Templin. Which is good, because they haven’t. The new GS, however, does notably improve what was one of the brand’s most confused offerings. The GS350, particularly the F Sport, shows real progress in making a more rewarding driver’s car. And the GS450h is a far more efficient and less compromised hybrid. There is, however, room to take the GS further in the sports direction, with turbocharging or supercharging, additional gears, and a still more focused chassis. But Lexus insiders insist that the 2013 GS is the beginning of a journey for the brand, not a destination, so we’ll just have to see where it leads.

Toyota’s newest offering, the GT 86 (the Scion FR-S stateside) bowed today at the Tokyo Motor Show along side it’s underpinings twin, the Subaru BRZ.

At it’s heart is a high-revving 197hp, 151lb-ft of torque, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine. Designed to allow it’s driver to return to the ’joys of motoring”, this compact coupe combines light weight and near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution, with power sent to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential. The design of the GT 86 uses a low centre of gravity and optimal aerodynamic performance, while working within the technical constraints of achieving the most compact dimensions possible. Toyota claims it’s the world’s most compact four-seater sports car. A conventional six-speed, short throw manual or 6-speed auto slushbox with steering wheel paddles shifters will be offered.

It looks like Honda and Acura are about to play a game of musical chairs with production lines: a falling dollar could be behind the decision to build the Honda CR-V in Canada and the Acura MDX in Alabama.

The move in MDX production – which is currently in Ontario, Canada – comes as Honda has made the decision to shift some production of the CR-V crossover from Japan to Ontario, as early as January of next year. Why move the CR-V production to Canada? Simply put, it’s increasingly difficult to make a CR-V profitable as the dollar’s value falls against the yen. The CR-V is currently also being made at plants in Ohio and Mexico.

Honda producing the CR-V in Ontario means that it will push that production line’s current product, the Acura MDX crossover, somewhere else. According to Reuters, that somewhere else is Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, its domestic production plant in Lincoln, Alabama, which currently makes about 300,000 Odysseys, Pilots, and Ridgelines per year, which share platform and mechanicals with the MDX. Reuters says that Honda will invest about $300 million to produce the MDX at the plant and increase output from 300,000 to 340,000 per year.

With plans now announced to move the MDX’s production, the next question is exactly which MDX it will make. Considering that the current generation of MDX is about five years old, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Alabama plant will deliver a new version of popular SUV. Granted, Honda has confirmed none of this, so we’ll have to wait and see if the A-badged high rider will get updates when it moves homes next year.

[singlepic id=215 w=600 h=375 float=]

Mazda recently revealed info on its new “i-ELOOP” (Intelligent Energy Loop) regenerative braking system – the first system to use a capacitor to store and release energy. The automaker claims the new system improves fuel economy by approximately 10 percent and will start appearing on its 2012 models.

Unlike other regenerative braking systems, like those used in hybrid cars that use a dedicated electric motor and battery, Mazda’s new system uses a capacitor because, it can be charged and discharged rapidly and can last many more cycles without deterioration compared to a battery.

Mazda’s system works toward the same goal: converting the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electricity as it decelerates; the stored energy is used to power the climate control, audio system and other vehicle electrical components. The Japanese automaker says the “i-ELOOP” system works with the company’s “i-stop” idle stop-and-go system to extend the time the engine can be shut off.

Because “i-ELOOP” doesn’t use a dedicated electric motor, it uses a new 12 to 25 volt variable voltage alternator, a low resistance electric double layer capacitor and a DC/DC converter. When the vehicle begins to decelerate, the variable voltage alternator generates as much as 25 volts to quickly charge the Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) for electrical energy storage. The DC/DC converter steps voltage down from 25 to 12 before the released energy is sent to the vehicle’s electrical system. i-ELOOP can also charge the vehicle’s battery if needed.

When the vehicle is decelerating or idling, the engine doesn’t need to burn as much fuel to generate energy because the regenerative braking system recovers kinetic energy and stores it as electricity. Mazda says that “i-ELOOP” and “i-stop” are part of its SkyActiv Technology strategy to maximize the efficiency of all aspects of its internal combustion engines by increasing fuel economy and reducing fuel consumption.

[singlepic id=210 w=640 h=380 float=]

Ford’s newest sport utility vehicle (SUV) arrives next year, bringing clever technologies and features designed to make life easier, and fuel economy projected to top any vehicle of its kind on the market.

Twelve years after it entered the market as a family-friendly, reasonably sized sport/utility box, the Ford Escape finally is getting the attention to design that something this popular deserves. The ironic thing is the outgoing model is flying off dealer lots, thanks in part to end-of-lifecycle discounting and the shortage of key Japanese competitors Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

The new 2013 model, which goes on sale in the first half of ’12, converges like most of the rest of non-F-Series/Mustang North American models with their European counterparts. The new one looks much more like the replacement for the European Ford Kuga than for the U.S. Escape. In Europe, the compact crossover with two rows of seating is far more popular, and far easier to find, than the three-row midsize and large crossovers that serve as replacements for full-on sport/utilities as well as minivans here.

Ford unveiled the Escape recently at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new model does share one thing in common with the F-150, and indeed the new Focus and Fiesta: It tries to be the compact crossover for everyone, with a long list of features that allows aspiring and luxury buyers alike to load up the option sheet without paying for a prestige name. Like the Focus Titanium vs. the Verano, it could compete with Buicks.[singlepic id=212 w=320 h=240 float=right]

The new model tosses out any V-6 option for three four-cylinder engines — two of them turbocharged gas direct-injection EcoBoosts — while maintaining a 3500-pound tow rating with either front- or all-wheel drive. The Escape Hybrid is scrubbed, with no apparent plans to reintroduce one in the future. Ford’s C-Max will be hybrid-only in the North American market, with a distinctive hybrid shape like the new Toyota Prius V, and without the heavy, mpg-sapping all-wheel-drive option. We also expect the ’13 Fusion, which will be Ford’s biggest new car intro of the model year when it bows at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, to carry on with a hybrid powertrain option.

The ’13 Escape’s carryover 2.5-liter four will be a price leader engine accounting for just 10 percent of sales, mostly to rental fleets. Its mainstream “replacement” is a new 1.6-liter EcoBoost rated at 173 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four will replace the 3.0-liter V-6 and make “at least” 237 horsepower and 250 lb-ft. Ford expects the EcoBoost engines to split the other 90 percent of sales.

Though EPA fuel economy ratings will be released closer to the new Escape’s on-sale date, Ford estimates up to 5 mpg better than the current Escape, with the 2.0 making more torque than a Toyota RAV4 V-6, and achieving higher fuel economy than a Honda CR-V, which is rated 23/31 mpg FWD, 22/30 mpg AWD. Ford says the current Escape sells about 50/50 front-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive, and expects that kind of split to continue with the new model, but that seems high. An AWD take rate like the Chevrolet Equinox’s 28.7 percent seems pretty reasonable, though Ford likes to think of itself as the SUV leader, and more likely to attract buyers who aspire to go off-road.

[singlepic id=209 w=320 h=240 float=left]Escape’s “Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive” puts 35 percent to 80 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, and constantly evaluates road conditions to adjust the split. There is no driver control. With AWD or FWD, the new Escape will come with the full complement of Ford’s latest nannies, including torque vectoring control, curve control, hill start assist, electronic brake assist, roll stability control, trailer sway control, and torque steer compensation. Curve control uses the ABS to “correct” impending oversteer or understeer in tight, fast off-ramps and the like, in both the FWD and the AWD versions. It cannot be turned off, and if it’s anything like the system introduced in the new Explorer, it will feel anal in its responses to any enthusiast who tries to push the Escape faster than the posted limit in a curve or off-ramp. So it’s probably just right for the vast majority of customers for this type of vehicle. Conversely, Ford promises “sportier” steering and handling than the RAV4 or CR-V.

Tangible showroom features will include interior quality up to the modern standard, and a simplified MyFordTouch reverting to actual knobs for radio volume and tuning. It also will have Ford’s hands-free liftgate, which allows you to open it simply by sliding your foot under the rear bumper when your hands are full, as long as the key fob is in your pocket. Improvements to MyFordTouch also include more tactile climate and navigation controls, a reaction to thorough market research Ford conducted to fix the updated version of Sync that sold so many cars and trucks in the last few years, and is now blamed for helping sink Ford’s quality scores. Ford shouldn’t worry so much. The hands-free liftgate is a cool enough feature to distract most buyers from any finicky MyFordTouch controls. It could be Ford’s biggest wagon-back feature breakthrough since the magic liftgate on 1966 models, and will assure that the Escape remains one of the most popular models in its class for years to come.

After the MINI , MINI Clubman , MINI Cabrio , MINI Countryman and MINI Coupe , now comes the sixth variant: the MINI Roadster , to complete a range of more varied, with which the brand under the umbrella of BMW is to a blow on the table and make it clear that, given the barrage of competing models that try to imitate them, they are the true kings of this disputed segment.

The operation of folding / unfolding is fairly quick and easy

This first roadster brand of British origin, is a direct descendant of a model presented not many months ago.We refer to MINI Coupé about which I offered full information at the time . But the operation has not been as easy as simply removing the roof. We performed a thorough reinforcement work at to achieve adequate torsional stiffness, as well as maintaining adequate levels of safety to their occupants. All this without penalizing an excessive overhead (although some weight gain if there is …). It should also be noted that due to the presence of a canopy made of textile material, the center of gravity of the vehicle is lowered, which positively influences behavior to maintain a flexible and accurate, as sought by buyers of this model.

Linked to the above, include the presence of a stainless steel roll bars, padded on the front, which help to enhance the aesthetics of the MINI Roadster, as it moves top down, while, along with the enhanced framework of the windshield guarantee an adequate protection of occupants in a rollover accident.

The “family” MINI has a new member …

But if there is an element that characterizes this unique model is the presence of a soft top , easy folding and unfolding, which gives it great versatility while providing protection to its occupants with only two adverse weather conditions. The system used is quite simple and intuitive, and can take place with one hand without difficulty. If we enjoy the air on our faces, there is nothing more than turning the locking lever is in the windshield frame and support the hood until completely folding the rear seats, which will be collected and will not be perfectly need for a cap. For its size the process is practically the contrary unless the prior release, pressing a button between the two roll bars. With the hood, black, closed, does not detract from the aesthetics at all, assimilating his silhouette more so that of his brother Coupé.

Sticking with the exterior, we see more similarities, as well as the presence of an automatic retractable spoiler that rises when it reaches a speed of 80 km / h and returns to its resting position when the speed drops below 60 km / h .Can also be activated manually, the driver will, by its corresponding command located under the windshield.Depending on the brand, this wing is able to generate an additional burden of about 40 kilograms when the car reaches its maximum speed.

As for the engines, so far only be offered four variants, all “old” known to us all. These are:

• John Cooper Works MINI Roadster : petrol engine uses a four-cylinder 1598 cc, with technology Twin-Scroll Turbo MINI to achieve an output of 211 hp at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 260 Nm. To get speed from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 237 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 7.3 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 169 g / km.

• MINI Cooper S Roadster : Use a gasoline engine with four cylinders and 1598 cc Twin Turbo technology-Scroll MINI.On this occasion the power supplied is 184 hp at 5,500 rpm, with maximum torque of 260 Nm. The time required to accelerate from standstill to 100 km / h is 7.0 seconds. The maximum speed is 227 km / h and average consumption drops to 6.0 liters per 100 kilometers. Meanwhile, CO2 emissions reach a value of 139 g / km.

• MINI Cooper Roadster -uses the less powerful petrol engine and is also four-cylinder with variable valve, Valvetronic technology thanks to the “house mother” BMW. The displacement of 1,598 cc is also, so that the power output is 122 hpat 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 160 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.2 seconds and top speed is 199 km / h. Average fuel consumption is 5.7 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions are 133 g / km.

• MINI Cooper Roadster SD : Finally I could not miss in the range variant fitted with a turbo four-cylinder engine with variable geometry turbo and 1,995 cc, delivering an output of 143 hp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 305 Nm .With all that this diesel-powered model accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.1 seconds and achieves a top speed of 212 km / h. The average consumption is the lowest of all, with just 4.5 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions also very low with 118 g / km.

The only “but” is limited luggage capacity

The only “but” is a limited carrying capacity in the very small trunk, since its volume is even lower than the Coupé, settling for just 240 liters , maybe enough for a quick getaway as a couple on a weekend, but not the weekly shopping for the whole family.

As is the norm in the house, there is an extensive catalogwith numerous customization possibilities (both external and internal) as well as various “gadgets” with which“customize” the model to make it unique. So far they have not been provided or prices, nor the date of marketing of this highly anticipated roadster.

Now I leave my own point of view: If I had enough money to purchase and maintain two vehicles, I have very clear that the MINI Roadster occupy one of the places in my garage.

Volkswagen will bow for 2012 a new hybrid version of the Toureg. The original Volkswagen Touareg was a bit slow: base models were saddled with a 217 hp V-6 engine and a sizeable curb weight. When time came to completely redesign the car for the 2011 model year, VW made some major changes, the biggest of which was slashing the SUV’s heft. The new Touareg is more than 400 pounds lighter than the previous version. To make the car even greener, the new top of the line engine is no longer a gas V-8 or a bonkers V-10 diesel — it’s a hybrid.

If you’re scratching your head as to how the Hybrid could be the muscle in the model range, look at this: the powertrain starts with a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 (borrowed from big brother Audi) which produces 333 hp and 325 lb-ft, and then adds an electric motor. Combine the two and the Touareg Hybrid makes a total of 380 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, enough to make it the most powerful vehicle VW sells in the States.

Lest you think that the tower of power Touareg Hybrid is a gas guzzler, we would remind you that it is, after all, a hybrid. The hybrid motor setup is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission which keeps fuel consumption low. At 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, the Hybrid even bests its V-6 gas sibling.

Unlike many other current hybrid, the Volkswagen Touareg ride nickel-metal hydride instead of lithium . The electric motor would have a power of 52 hp, and would lie between the conventional engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. The combustion provide a 333 hp turbo V6 for the vehicle ran out of strength.

The hybrid system of the German firm would be less complex than the competition, see BMW / Chrysler / Mercedes-Benz / GM in two ways, or the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive. This would reduce costs and engineering work, but it implies thatonly the electric motor can be used to recharge the battery or , not both at once. A disadvantage compared to other mechanisms.

According to Volkswagen Touareg this would be between about 7-10% more efficient than the conventional . There is already a test unit to which one has already been able to hand over. The result is that the truth was quite satisfactory, ignoring the odd hiccup with the change.

Clearly, the green and green is gaining ground . Surprisingly, as anti-ecological models as they can be the Touareg, Cayenne and Q7 also aimed to fashion. ¿Pure marketing strategy? Change in the minds of the manufacturers?¿Gesture to the gallery? In this case I opted for the first and third option. With such a low savings as they foresee a hybrid Touareg is completely dispensable, the world could clearly live without it. It would be better for manufacturers to do this type of model experiments more affordable and more sales, the environment would appreciate much more than in the case of this behemoth.
